Shelley Shepard Gray is an author of Inspirational Fiction. I have enjoyed several of her Amish novels. I read an article where Shelley says her book titles "dictate all the themes in the book, both romantic and spiritual". This certainly seems to be the case with her latest book, A Son's Vow, book one in The Charmed Amish Life series.

In A Son's Vow,  several characters are fighting against or trying to keep vows that they made to others and to God. When a fire at a local mill kills a handful of it's workers, surviving family's faith in God and in members of the community are put to the test.

This book is different from many Amish stories in that it puts abuse, physical and emotional, front and center. This is a difficult subject to tackle and I appreciate how Shelley approached it from the viewpoints of the abuser and the one being abused. The main character Darla Kurtz is a sweet young woman as is minor character Hannah Eicher, who story I am sure continues with the series. If you are looking for something a little different than the run-of-the-mill Amish Fiction this is a book that I would recommend. I received a free copy of this book from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my honest review.
