RECIPES rolled sugar cookies


Here is the first cookbook I ever owned, the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook. I got it free when I ordered my wedding invitations. What an inexperienced cook I was back then! But these cookies turned out the very first time I made them.

Rolled Sugar Cookies

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
6 tablespoons butter or margarine *my notes - I have never used butter so I'm not sure of the results
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Stir together flour, baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Beat butter and shortening for 30 seconds; add sugar and beat till fluffy. Add egg, milk, and vanilla; beat well. Add dry ingredients to beaten mixture, beating till well combined. Cover and chill at least 3 hours. Working with 1/2 the dough at a time, on a lightly floured surface roll to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 8 minutes till done. Makes 36 to 48.
